Top military officer among 12 soldiers killed in attack

At least 12 soldiers, including two high-ranking commanders were killed, and several injured in a deadly gun and bomb attack by Al shabaab in Southern Somalia on Sunday.

Two commander, among them Mohamed Hassan Bakay died in a remote-controlled land mine blast targeted their convoy on the road linking Afgoye to Wanlaweyn town, source said.

The military officials were heading to Tihsile village as reinforcement to Somali troops during clashes with the Al Qaeda-linked Al shabaab fighters, according to a senior regional official.

Sunday’s attack was the deadliest on the country’s army since the new President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo was elected by the Somali MPs last Wednesday, February 8 in Mogadishu.
