Ethiopian Govt Arrests 34 Senior Officials, Business People For Alleged Corruption

ADDIS ABABA, July 26 — The Ethiopian government has arrested 34 senior government officials and business persons for alleged corrupt practices, say the Minister in charge of the Government Communication Affairs Office (GCAO), Dr. Negeri Lencho.

He told a media briefing here Tuesday that the government had started a crackdown on rent-seekers and more than 30 persons had been arrested, adding that a study carried out thus far indicated that this number will rise.

The suspects arrested are from governmental institutions and the private sector. The senior government officials are from the Addis Ababa Roads Authority, the Federal Roads Authority, the Sugar Corporation, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Co-operation and other institutions, the Minister disclosed.
